The Sponsored Scientific Researcher Initiative (SSRI)
Engaging overseas researchers
The Sponsored Scientific Researcher Initiative enables organisations to engage research scientists in formal research projects and/or collaborations for sharing knowledge, experience and best practice. Sponsored researchers also experience the social and cultural life of the United Kingdom.
For fixed term research projects for up to 24 months
The scheme accommodates overseas postgraduate scientists to undertake a fixed-term research project and/or collaboration in the United Kingdom for up to 24 months within an internationally recognised host institute/laboratory. It covers all formal research projects and collaborations recognised by the Research Councils and provides experience, training and collaboration throughout all countries in the United Kingdom.
Government backing
The scheme is backed by the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and endorsed by the UK Border Agency. RCUK Shared Services Centre Ltd is the over-arching sponsor and will issue a Certificate of Sponsorship to successful applicants.
Participation in this scheme does not lead to settlement in the UK and the Scientific Researcher will be expected to leave the UK on the completion of the formal research project or after 24 months, whichever is soonest.
