What we do

The RCUK Shared Services Centre Ltd (the SSC) draws together a wide range of services – from HR and Finance through to IT, Procurement and Grants – in one central location in Swindon. In total, we offer seven main areas of service to the Research Councils:

Service Delivery and Contact Centre – Caring for customers

  • Over 90% of SSC personnel focus directly on customer service delivery
  • Customer Contact Centre committed to excellent service and rapid exchange of information

Procurement – Smarter sourcing

  • Centralised procurement through a core team in Swindon complemented by personnel based regionally
  • Delivering quality and savings through close liaison with Research Councils
  • New Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution, boosting productivity through online ordering and enhanced management information

Finance – Tackling transactions

  • Working in partnership with the Research Councils’ finance functions
  • Essential accounting and reporting, transaction processing, query resolution and technical advice
  • Information processing, management of routine processes and the Finance Contact Centre

Grants administration - Simplifying funding

  • Supporting Research Councils in delivering grants, fellowships and studentships
  • Expert grants processing, including a service desk to respond to queries
  • Enabling Research Councils to focus on activities directly related to research
  • Delivering one service using one system for all Research Councils

Payroll – Paying our people

  • Delivered using the Oracle payroll application and operated in-house from the SSC
  • Service designed to deliver savings while improving efficiency, quality and management information
  • Paying all Research Council and SSC employees

Human Resources – Taking care of employees

  • Working closely with the Research Councils' HR teams
  • Providing first line advisory services to all Research Council employees
  • Support services and Transaction processing to the wider HR community across the Research Councils’ institutes

ISS – Keeping people connected

  • Full range of IT and telephony services for the Research Council HQs in Swindon
  • Advanced software systems supporting both the SSC and Research Council users
  • Operation and support of the Grants Joint Electronic Submissions (Je-S) system
